Yesterday, we fetched the wifey and the second from the Bacolod -Silay Airport and since their arrival from Cebu was a bit late, we decided to spend our dinner at Ann Co Cakes in Silay City.

Recently, we have many new eat places to discover in Silay City.  These new restaurants and cafes are a big help for people who travel a lot because these are convenient places to make their stomach full before going to their respective destination in Negros Occidental.

For those traveling down south and driving the main road, Ann Co Cakes is one of those restaurants that are easy to go to because it is located along the highway.  Aside for its accessibility, here are other "firsts" to discover from Ann Co Cakes, Silay City.

1. New Items on the Menu

Their avocado cheesecake tasted so good - the sweetness is just enough, a little salty or bitter and served without the usual syrup poured on top of the cake, better for those who are conscious about their blood sugar level. This is a welcome treat for us, who are used to ordering Mango or Strawberry Cheesecake.

Instead of syrup, this Frozen Avocado Cheesecake was sprinkled with almond

 2.  Whimsical Artworks

The walls are turned into an artist canvas. Yes, all the nook and cranny were not spared, not even the outside walls.  Most artworks are paintings of people with very detailed features, some with a big head or long neck and scenes of everyday life.

Before, the walls were painted sparingly but now, you can see many interesting art pieces, which you will appreciate while eating your meal.

This is the new table and chairs that is found beside the old sala set.

The old sala set has an elaborate illustration of an "haciendero" riding his horse.

3.  Function Room

They had constructed additional space reserved as a function room, which is used to be an open area for entrance but now converted into extra space for the cafe.

It has a floor to ceiling crystal wall fronting the main road.  You can have the best view of the people and vehicles passing by.  Just like the existing store space, this new room has fascinating illustrations as well.

This is the new Function Room taken from the outside;the drawings seem to compliment the view from the inside.

4.  New Furniture

The cafe has table and chairs of different designs. They now have two sets of sofa and chairs, very comfortable for that cozy afternoon coffee or good conversation with someone special.

The high tables and chairs were also noticeable, similar to the ones we see in bars.  It is ideal for big groups who are fond of sipping cold drinks and smoothies.

Dining at Ann Co Cakes was indeed worthwhile because of these new features.  They say that if you want to stay in business, you should innovate, find something new to offer to your customers.  Ann Co Cakes will surely stay in business.

For someone who has a 9-to-6 job, maintaining the upkeep of the household is not easy. You have to spare extra time to be able to deal with the seemingly mundane chores.

Since I am not a technical person, most of the time I find it hard to look for a plumber, electrician, welder, and other technicians to fix things at home. Additionally, I find it hard to schedule an appointment with them, since they are also available on weekdays.

Just two weeks ago, I discovered that my daughters' room air conditioning (AC) unit is not behaving normally. I found out that ice was formed inside, making their room not cool enough.

I am thankful that an established air conditioning technician company is available in Talisay City, wherein I can just call for home cleaning service and set an appointment with. This is the second time that I asked for their aircon cleaning service.

GAB Appliance Service Center, specializes in aircon sales, installation, and services. It has branches in Cebu, Davao and other parts in the Visayas and Mindanao. Because I am satisfied with the way they handled my request, I want to write a positive review for them.

Excellent Customer Service

Setting an appointment for home service and expecting a reply is easy and immediate, respectively. They will tell you if they cannot serve you on your preferred schedule.

Polite and Skilled Technicians

The three technicians arrived in the familiar blue GAB Aircon uniform. They are helpful in patiently explaining to me, what causes the condenser to malfunction. They ensure that not a single debris remains in the condenser.

Accessible Location

The office location is situated along the main road, Magsaysay Highway, within one of the commercial areas in Talisay City. Finding their office is a breeze.

Knowing GAB Appliance Service Center has solved a part of my problem when it comes to doing menial jobs.

With changing lifestyle and work arrangement, I hope other miscellaneous service companies will operate a branch in Talisay City soon or an online store for these miscellaneous services be centralized in one website for us, consumers to connect with when the need arises.

Was it difficult for you to look for technicians to fix something at home? Where do you usually go to find them? Share that with us in the Comments Section below.

Bonding moment with the youngest is best spend with  good food

Whenever we find it hard to decide what restaurant to go to for our dinner, we always check those located along the Circumferential Road, fronting the New Government Center (NGC).  Over the years, that portion of land developed by Villa Angela Subdivision is now a row of restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and other business establishments. It is becoming a haven for food hunters and first-timers in Bacolod City who would like to taste the unique Bacolod dishes and desserts.

And so, we found ourselves at Big Daddy’s Diner located inside Eastwalk - a block of small restaurants and cafes, usually catering to the nearby call center agents. What caught my attention, upon entering the store, was the large photograph of a New York scene pasted in one of the walls.  It seems they want us to feel that we are eating in one of the diners in the US.

The life-sized picture of a New York building makes diners feel the "stateside" vibe.

As depicted in the movies I've seen, most diners across America has warm, casual and happy-go-lucky set-up.  American diners, usually serve burgers, pancake, grilled sandwiches, and fries as well as local comfort food.

We will find out if Big Daddy's Diner lives up to its American copycat.

My First Impressions
The place looks "stateside" (an Ilonggo term, referring to anything imported).  We found our seats comfortably in one of the corners, with a long cushioned bench and white stained-free tabletop. The ceiling air conditioning units allow us to feel a very cold interior as the weather outside was blazingly hot that day. The interior's color palette is in striking red and white.  The walls are in subtle blue and green combination.

They have uniformed staff with the store's logo printed at the back of the collared shirt.  I did not notice if they have nameplates, too.  Wearing of the nameplate is useful for us to identify our assigned staff in cases we need to have additional orders or we want to request for our bill.

As in most restaurants, the table and chairs have different designs and arrange differently from one group to the other to make it more interesting to the eyes.  For more leisurely dining, there are two sets of table and chairs overlooking the busy street outside.  You may observe different kinds of vehicle and people passing by the Circumferential Road.

There is an al fresco dining area, just before you step in the store.  If you are a big group and you want to smoke and be rowdy at the same time, then this area is for you.

Big Daddy’s Diner Menu
The menu includes everything that average eaters want.  It has starters or appetizers, pizza, pasta, burger, waffles, sandwiches, shakes, desserts, beverages, all-day breakfast, soups and salad, main courses, combo meals and special bundle meals for a big group.

Considering that the food choices are quite extensive, there may be an occasion wherein some of the food is not available.  This is very frustrating for me and I hope this will not happen should I set foot again in this place.

By the way, for set meals, you may select either rice, hash brown or pancake to go with your meal.
The staff was quick in getting our orders while our food arrived a little late.  I understand it because there was only one staff available the whole time.

But, sometimes this is one of the reasons why customers keep away from restaurants with limited staff, especially during peak hours.

The service is generally average, obviously because only one person is taking and giving our orders. I even have to stand up to get a toothpick from the counter.

Our Food
For this particular review, I ordered Crispy Boneless Bangus, while my youngest daughter went for the creamy chicken pesto and my beloved wifey got the Saucy Spareribs.

The serving portion size was reasonable vis-a-vis the price. My boneless bangus was breaded and deep-fried.  It went with an atcharra and vinegar dip,
My daughter's chicken pesto is quite big, she did not finish eating the pasta. For wifey, her grilled spare ribs came with a sweet sauce poured generously on top of the meat dish.

My dish is "americanized" - with hash brown. for P  180.00

The saucy Sparerib is a staple for P170.00

I am very glad to note that all of the restaurants we have visited so far, take food presentation seriously, Big Daddy’s Dinner included.

My Rating
I give Big Daddy's Diner a FOUR (on the scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest).  Did it live up to her stateside counterpart?  I guess, it did.

I like the not-so-formal laid back feel,  limited crowd, and the reasonable price dishes, yet delicious food.

As an added service offering, the store has delivery service via a dedicated housekeeper/messenger.

Delivery service is becoming popular nowadays because of the changes in the lifestyle and work habits of the people

On the minus-points, the restaurant should improve its customer service a bit, because customers may find another food place if he is not convinced by the services of the store.

Finding parking space is hard during peak hours.  However, you may avail of the paid parking in front of the Eastwalk area.

I would like to go back, with my family to try their Filet Mignon or Sizzling Blue Marlin or maybe check the additional menu offerings in the future.

Big Daddy’s Diner is located at Door No. 1, Eastwalk Circumferential Road, Bacolod City.    You may get in touch with this restaurant thru their Facebook page:

Our intimate fine dining at Z Bistro

When my daughter brought up the idea that we will have our dinner at Z Bistro, I agreed without hesitation.  This was our second time to visit this place and I guess this is the perfect time to write about their food and services.

Z Bistro is just a small place, which is located right before you enter the new Stonehill Suites Hotel.  It has about less than ten 4-seater tables and chairs and a small bar, very suitable for small events, if you are having 10-15 guests.  Parking within the hotel or restaurant area is quite easy during off-peak hours, but maybe difficult when customers are pouring in during lunchtime and dinner, especially on weekends.

My First Impressions
The interior looks classy,  using subdued colors in black and white.  This is a fresh look from the usual restaurant themes of late - elaborate, colorful and too crowded decors.  As it is small, decorations are minimal and the lighting is perfect for an intimate dinner.  I  like the chandelier made of wood and sort of decorated the ceiling perfectly.

The table and chairs can be re-arranged to suit the number of guests in a group.  Since I am with my wife and daughter, they placed the table against the wall, making the three sides usable for the three of us.  The unused side of the table saves extra space.

The Bar area serves as a serving counter too, a space-saving idea.
 Z Bistro’s Menu
There is quite a variety of food to choose from the menu.  While the choices are not extensive, the menu lists are arranged according to the type of meat - chicken, pork and beef and lamb.

There are appetizers, soup, pasta, seafood, burger and sandwiches, and all-day breakfast meals.  It has non-alcoholic drinks, local alcoholic drinks, and imported ones, too; available per shot or bottle.

Hot and cold beverages are available for tea and coffee drinkers as well as desserts for the sweet-toothed guests. Main courses' bestsellers include pork sisig, fried chicken in a basket, ribeye steak and pepper steak.

We went there for an early dinner, so understandably, only a few guests were present.  The staff got our orders as soon as we were settled in our seats and ate our food after a considerable time.

The take-out orders for my other daughter and bill were given as soon as we requested for them. It helps because they have three frontliners waiting for the guests' needs of around 10 persons. I hate restaurants who have limited staff, especially when I am ignored if I called them to request for something.

The staff have a pleasing personality and were generally polite.  Requesting for condiments and other eating needs are a breeze, since you may call them immediately, within hearing distance.  Asking us if we have additional orders or if we like to have coffee or dessert was an excellent staff's gesture.

Our Food

For this particular review, I tried one of their bestsellers, the crunchy and spicy Sisig, while my youngest daughter went for the creamy carbonara and my beloved wifey got the cheesy grilled cheese sandwich.

The serving portion size was decent. My sisig was just enough for me,  It has crunchy garlic scattered generously above the grilled ground pork which gave the whole dish a new twist.

My daughter's carbonara has bacon and mushrooms served with a lavish amount of cream sauce,  For wifey, her grilled cheese sandwich came with the cheese melted and the looks so tempting you cannot wait to eat it or else it will not taste good when it is eaten cold.

I observed that the cook took efforts in presenting the dishes in such a way that our food were appealing to the sight.

My sisig was sprinkled with generous garlic and costs P220.00

O ha! Carbonarra costs P225.00

The cheesy grilled cheese sandwich costs P140.00
 My Rating
I give Z Bistro a FIVE (on the scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest).  I like the cozy ambiance, limited crowd, and the reasonable price dishes, yet delicious and served in standard portion.  The friendly staff is a plus, too.

On the minus-points, it might be difficult to find parking space during peak hours.  At night time, it is quite a security issue if you find parking space too far from the hotel because the nearby areas are not well-lit.

I would like to go back, with my family to try their backribs and pepper steak or maybe check the additional menu offerings in the future.
