Three Bank Scams That are Common During the Lockdown

Thursday, June 25, 2020

Due to the government-imposed lockdown and the prevalent use of online banking channels, cybercriminals are on the loose again. They are becoming more clever and sophisticated in carrying out their evil schemes.

From an email that looks like it came from your legitimate bank or a phone call from a fake call center agent threatening you to block your credit card if you will not respond promptly for account verification, these online crimes are generally hard to monitor and prosecute the culprit.

But, how does bank scam happen?

There is only one requirement for bank scam to happen - your banking credentials. These are your username, password, account numbers, and One-Time Password (OTP).

How about, if the scammer has your account number only?

There is nothing that the scammer can do with just the account number.

The fraudster should have all your banking credentials for every successful scam to happen.

Then, the scammer can withdraw, transfer funds from your account or used up the credit limit of your credit card.

Knowing the nature of bank fraud and how scammers carry out their scheme, we avoid ourselves from losing our hard-earned money.

In this post, we will discuss the nature of bank frauds and how these are being done by criminals.

Nature of Bank Fraud

1. Skimming

Card skimming is the illegal process of copying financial information from the magnetic strip of an ATM or credit card.

Bank scammers will create a fake card with your details on it. Then, they will withdraw or make purchases using the cloned card.

Sometimes, scammers go to the extent of copying your personal details and account numbers and borrow money or take out loans in your name.

2. Phishing

Phishing is the unauthorized collection of financial details by sending legitimate-looking emails or the creation of replicas of valid web pages, which will be used to steal money from the victim's account.

Common Bank Fraud

Recently, there are many reported cases of bank fraud on the internet. I can relate how it feels to experience having your card details compromised.

So, before we become victims of bank fraud, let us know how these fraudsters conduct their criminal intent to their potential target.

There are three ways they conduct their business, thru emails, call or text message, and the most recent one - SIM swap.

The purpose of the scammer is to get your personal data. Then, they can steal money from your account.

1. Fake Email

The scammer will send an email requesting the victim to verify his account through a link that opens up to a fake bank website.

The reasons for the account verification are varied - suspicious activity, confirmation of registered mobile number, or transaction alerts, etc. Usually, the tone of the email is threatening and urgent.

2. Fake Call/Text Message

The scammer sends a text message or calls the target, to trick him into believing that someone else used his card to purchase something expensive.

Then, he will ask for your credit card number, the CCV found at the back of the card, the expiry of the card, and the One-Time-Password (OTP).

There are other variations of the nature of the call, but the aim is to get the victim’s account credentials.

3. SIM Swap

The fraudsters will disguise as telco agents offering SIM Card upgrades. They will take the victim's SIM card which they will use to access his online banking account to withdraw or purchase from the victim’s account.

Our money in the bank may not be safe anymore. Many scams take place over the internet, making them hard to trace and prosecute.

PIN THIS FOR LATER

This is further aggravated by the Data Privacy Act, which prohibits institutions to divulge account information without the necessary court order, making it hard for the concerned parties to get the data needed for an investigation.

We need to be wary of people asking us for our personal and financial information. Fraudsters are everywhere and they are just waiting for the right timing to conduct their modus operandi. We do not want to be the next target.

PIN THIS FOR LATER.

Creative Way to Hold a Family Summer Outing Despite the Lockdown

Most of us experienced canceled travel, postponed birthdays, or other deferred celebrations because of the lockdown.

But our family did not let the quarantine situation spoiled the annual family gathering, which was already planned long before the COVID 19 pandemic phenomenon.

It has always been a family tradition to make a family get-together every summer. Most of my siblings and their families free up certain weeks of their summer schedule for this highly anticipated annual family gathering.

Read the family's summer adventure here:

Usually, the planning took so many months in advance, considering the schedules of each one and continues until the actual event.

For this year, the hotel where we are supposed to stay for three days and two nights was paid long before this pandemic becomes a household name.

So, it is kind of crazy and frustrating knowing that what we had planned for so many months just went down the drain.

But staying at home for a long time had made us somehow creative. Don't you know that you can hold any family activities, and celebrate with food and drinks without going outside the house?

Rather than getting the government-imposed quarantine measures to get in the way of our routine, why not hold a DIGITAL SUMMER PARTY. Yes, that was what we did to make the annual family tradition happened.

Here's a quick run-down of what took place during the preparation and the actual event.

One Family, One Team

Each family was formed as a team. The family should give a name for their team. For our team name, my daughter suggested "Team Bang" as our team name.

Hmm, that sounds catchy, a play on the word timbang (an Ilonggo term meaning, house helper), so I agreed.

Tik-tok Challenge

Each team submits a Tik-Tok video. The video had no restrictions, whatsoever. So, anyone can submit any kind of video.

For this part, it was a challenge really because our two daughters are not with us. The daughters made a concept that would address this problem.

The finished video turned out impressive. All of us participated in the video, together with our two doggies.

Enjoy one of the entries:  Durarat Team Tiktok Challenge

Cooking Contest

The contest determined who is the best cook of the family.

Here are the requirements. Each team was assigned the main ingredient of the dish. The family cook decides what meal to prepare.

The team submits a video for documentation purposes. For Team Bang, we were given rice as the main ingredients.

Our eldest who is the prolific cook came up with rice porridge with chicken strips. Watching the videos and looking at her pictures, I know the dish tastes yummy and delicious.

Please watch some of the cooking entries:

The Zoom Meeting aka FAMILY DIGITAL PARTY

After two weeks of preparation, we are now ready to attend the first-ever FAMILY DIGITAL PARTY. The venue: The Zoom.

At 8 PM, all of us gathered in front of our laptops and mobile phones and connected to the Zoom Meeting.

We were happy seeing each one appearing on our computer screen. When everyone was connected, my nephew moderated the whole party.

He had a program prepared. He also explained the mechanics of the contests.

The Tik-tok Challenge videos were the funniest of all while the Cooking Contest proved we are more of a diner rather than a cook. Just look at me, ha..ha..ha.

It was one big loud party, with our grandchildren running around, just like on previous occasions.

The Winners and Prizes

To make it a little bit exciting, winners were declared for each category. The prizes were pooled together from the donations of the nephews and nieces.

It was a unique experience, seeing my sisters, their children, and grandchildren after so many months, in the video.

We had also nephew or nieces with their children joined the party, too. We were happy exchanging stories and laughing at old family jokes.

What made this family affair extra special was it made family members from other parts of the country and abroad attended.

Indeed, this one big event proved that nothing can hinder us from showing our concerns and love for each other as a family.

Cheers to the next summer adventure.

Five Reasons Why Walking Your Dogs is Important

Monday, June 8, 2020

Dogs, just like us are social beings, too. They love to play and interact with other animals and humans.

When they are free to roam around, dogs love to sniff, to smell what appears strange or peculiar to their noses.

Dogs who do not get the right exercises like walking tend to get bored easily or they become unfriendly even to their owners.

In this article, I will discuss the importance and health benefits of dog walking.

1. Walking releases the dog's excess energy.

Big dogs such as Labrador are generally playful and active dogs. Depriving our adorable fur kids with the opportunity to get active will make them unhealthy.

But keeping a regular walking routine makes our dogs happy and in good shape.

2. Walking facilitates interaction with other dogs and animals.

Many dogs tend to follow what we do best during our free time - to interact and relate with our friends. Dogs are not different. Meeting or smelling the scent of other dogs and animals while exploring new areas is an interesting adventure for our dogs.

3. Walking is good for the dog's mental stimulation.

Making little changes to the dog's routine will keep him from getting bored and destructive.

Regular walks provide new experiences outside our homes. Seeing new scenery, unfamiliar smells, meeting other dogs with their owners, and exploring obstacles are perfect brain stimulants.

Do you think that eating, sleeping, and eating, though not necessarily in this order is an interesting exercise?

4. Walking is an endless bonding moment with our dogs.

We are the "world" to our dogs. They always want our attention. Walking is one of the best ways for our dogs to get 100% of our time. Plus, it deepens our emotional connection with our furry friends.

5. Walking prevents urinary and digestive problems

Regular outside trips make it easy for our dogs to relieve themselves. Health problems are more likely to occur for doggies who are not able to relieve themselves regularly.

I know what I am talking about. We have two fun-loving doggos - Bolt, who is a Shih Tzu, and Sky, a Labrador. Sky has a regular morning walking routine. Bolt, on the other hand, loves to follow us around the house and plays his favorite squeaky neon green ball. Those are his form of exercises.

Related Posts:

Being with our dogs allows for great bonding moments. Remember, we have our family and friends to shower us with love and support, while our pets have only us to depend on their needs and attention.

Let us spend more time with our dogs by giving them a regular walking exercise.

Five Fun Things to do in Satori Cliff, Basay, Negros Oriental

Friday, June 5, 2020

Satori Cliff in Basay, Negros Oriental is a must-see place for someone who loves nature and extreme water activities.

Going to Satori Cliff takes a lot of travel time, around five hours if you are coming from Bacolod City. So, to make your effort more practical, you should include this tourist sight as part of your Hinobaan travel itinerary.

Related Posts:

In this article, I will discuss the five fun activities to make your Satori Cliff sojourn more fun and memorable:

1. Stroll around and read interesting quotes.

Satori Cliff's area is around less than one hectare of amazing rock formations and greens with a cliff whose height is as tall as a three-story building from the viewing deck to the water down below.

You will appreciate the benefits of trees in the environment because roaming around the area is a comfortable exercise plus you will read a lot of interesting quotes. Some lines are funny too, you won't realize you already covered the whole area by reading all the phrases.

2. Have a picnic in one of the gazebos.

Be it with family, friends or special someone, having a cool smoothie and chips is memorable. With the trees and rock formation as a backdrop, you will have a lot to talk about after visiting Satori.

But, you need to bring your own food as the lone food kiosk there sells junk food and cold drinks only.

3. Watch the sunset.

If you are a hopeless romantic or just simply a sunset lover, watching the sunset in the middle of the sea, unobstructed is a rare opportunity.

You will love the bursting of different colors of orange and red as the sun slowly kisses the sea goodbye. Plus, the viewing deck overlooking the cliff is the best place to be in while watching the sun slowly descends to the ocean floor.

You are given a front-row seat as you watch in awe and take pictures of the sunset on the horizon.

4. Dive or snorkel in the deep blue water.

Bring along your diving gear and snorkel when you want to do these water activities. The resort's management is not yet offering rentals of these equipment.

While I did not come closer to the seawater down below, I was told that swimmers are treated to a display of coral reefs and many fish species in the water.

5. Take as many pictures as you can.

Take unlimited pictures to remember your visit here. The surroundings are worthy of an Instagram picture. The photos accompanying this post are not lying.

Final Thought

We communed with nature. The amazing rock formations and the high cliff is one-of-a-kind. For a city dweller like us, this is a rare sight and experience.

We had so much fun taking pictures and having endless conversations with my siblings, an opportunity we missed doing for a long time.
